Drakensberg
Gardens, Southern Drakensberg |

|
This was our third
visit to the Drakensberg, or "Berg" as we know it here. (click
to see map)We had
previously been to the Northern and Central Berg, so for a change we
decided to try out the Southern Berg. And what a good decision it
was! (Must've been my idea, lol)
To get to Drakensberg Gardens, you drive through the town of Underberg, and 30 kilometers further on a very reasonable gravel road, and driving through breathtaking scenery, you reach the resort. The area had some snow a week or so before we got there and we could still see patches of snow on the mountain slopes in the distance. Just our luck to miss the snow, apparently they were building snowmen on the bowling green! Owell, better luck next time, and a next time there will be for certain. We are keen walkers/hikers and enjoyed the various trails in the resort. The more adventurous hikers can enter the parks property and hike in the Berg proper. That was a bit ambitious for us, perhaps next time. The resort is what I call a "one stop holiday shop". There is something for everyone, from a great golf course, to bowls, mini golf, pitch n putt, croquet and even trout fishing in the dam. The Drakensberg Gardens resort consists of the Hotel, Riverbend Chalets, Mountain View Chalets and Fairways, with luxury chalets overlooking the 18 hole golf course. The chalets are fully equipped and spacious. There is a fireplace for a crackling log fire to warm up cold winter evenings. A restaurant and coffee shop is available for those who do not want to be bothered with preparing their own meals. We had a fantastic week, lots of relaxation, refreshing walks, fresh air, more relaxation, great photography and breathtaking mountain views. We will certainly be back! Hopefully we will be lucky and experience the thrill of snow next time! Contact the resort at http://www.goodersonvacations.com |
